 General Information

The Envirothon at the local, state and national level, educates high school students in natural resource and environmental sciences since its first local contest was held in 1979. The Envirothon emphasizes the importance of environmental sensitivity while stressing a need to achieve a social, ecologic and economic balance in life. The learning objectives emphasize awareness, knowledge, attitudes and application. The Envirothon provides future generations with the ability to be better equipped to address the complex natural resource concerns facing today's world as well as the challenges of tomorrow.  Susquehanna Valley High School Envirothon

Thirty-nine teams involving nearly 190 students from thirteen schools in five central Pennsylvania counties arrived at the Shikellamy State Park Overlook for the annual Susquehanna Valley High School Envirothon held on April 25, 2017.

Topics that the students were tested in were wildlife, forestry, aquatics, soils and a specific current issues topic that changes yearly. The current issue topic for this year is sustainable agriculture. Each team also visited a non-testing station in which controlled fires and forest fire fighting were discussed.

The Snyder County winning team was from Selinsgrove Area High School located in Selinsgrove. Team members were (above, left to right) Nathan Moyer, John Merroth Jr., Jacob Dock, Addie Lannan and Alyssa Landis. (Curtis Swineford, not pictured, Ag. Education teacher, was the team’s advisor). They placed eighth (2nd) overall out of 39 teams and were the top scoring team in the aquatics station.

A team from Mifflinburg Area High School in Union County won the overall title this year. For more information, check out this summary.

 PA & Canon Envirothons

Each county was eligible to send their top team to the PA State Envirothon each year. In 2017, teams competed at the University of Pittsburg at Johnstown on May 23 and 24. (Go to "Envirothon Downloads" and the PA State Envirothon website for the contest details as well as the link on this web page's right.) The PA winners came from a school in Delaware County.

Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove hosted the Canon Envirothon in 2012. This event brought state and provincial Envirothon winners throughout the USA and Canada at one place for "North American's largest environmental education competition." The 2012 Canon Envirothon celebrated "25 Years of Envirothon," a tradition that started here in Pennsylvania by conservation districts. Volunteers from PA conservation districts and other agencies helped with the event. Click here for details and photos and click here for a YouTube video. In 2017, the North America Envirothon (now known as NCF-Envirothon) will be held at Mount St. Mary's University, Emmitsburg, Maryland. Each state and provincial winner advances to this contest scheduled for July.

 Middle School Envirothon

SCCD also helps out with the annual Susquehanna Valley Middle School Envirothon with conservation districts from Columbia, Montour, Northumberland and Union Counties. Seventh and eighth graders from the five county region participate in testing and hands-on activities.

The 2017 event will be held at the Montour Preserve near Danville and Washingtonville on May 9. Contact the SCCD (570-837-3000) for event details.
