 General Information

The Envirothon at the local, state and national level, educates high school students in natural resource and environmental sciences since its first local contest was held in 1979. The Envirothon emphasizes the importance of environmental sensitivity while stressing a need to achieve a social, ecologic and economic balance in life. The learning objectives emphasize awareness, knowledge, attitudes and application. The Envirothon provides future generations with the ability to be better equipped to address the complex natural resource concerns facing today's world as well as the challenges of tomorrow. Thirty-four (34) teams involving nearly 170 students from various schools in five central Pennsylvania counties arrived at the Shikellamy State Park Marina for the annual Susquehanna Valley High School Envirothon held on April 30, 2019.  (The Marina is located near Sunbury, PA on Packers Island.)

Topics that the students were tested in were wildlife, forestry, aquatics, soils and a specific current issues topic that changes yearly. The current issue topic for this year is agricultural technologies. A non-testing station that described the habitat and history of the American eel was also held.

Each conservation district awarded medals to the highest scoring team from its county. The Snyder County winners were from Selinsgrove Area High School located in Selinsgrove. They placed seventh (7th) overall out of 47 teams that competed. (A team from Central Columbia High School in Columbia County won the overall title this year.)

 PA & Canon Envirothons

Each county was eligible to send their top team to the PA State Envirothon each year. In 2018, teams competed at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove and Camp Mount Luther near Mifflinburg on May 22 and 23. (Go to "Envirothon Downloads" and the PA State Envirothon website for the contest details as well as the link on this web page's right column.) The PA winners came from Carmichaels Area High School in Green County.

In 2019, the PA Envirothon will be held at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown on May 21 & 22.

Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove hosted the Canon Envirothon in 2012. This event brought state and provincial Envirothon winners throughout the USA and Canada at one place for "North American's largest environmental education competition." The 2012 Canon Envirothon celebrated "25 Years of Envirothon," a tradition that started here in Pennsylvania by conservation districts. Volunteers from PA conservation districts and other agencies helped with the event. Click here for details and photos and click here for a YouTube video. In 2018, the North America Envirothon (now known as NCF-Envirothon) was at the Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. Each state and provincial winner advanced to this contest scheduled held in late-July with a team from New Your placing first.

 Middle School Envirothon

SCCD also helps out with the annual Susquehanna Valley Middle School Envirothon with conservation districts from Columbia, Montour, Northumberland and Union Counties. Seventh and eighth graders from the five county region participate in testing and hands-on activities.

The 2019 was held at the Montour Preserve near Danville and Washingtonville on May 14. Check out information about this event here.
