 Nature Trail

The Snyder County Conservation District (SCCD) nature trail is located just off Salem Road, between Salem Road and the Middlecreek Valley Antique Association (MVAA) grounds. The trail was made possible with assistance from the Growing Greener Grants Program under the office of Pollution Prevention and Compliance Assistance, PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Parking for the trail is right along Salem Road on the extra wide berm just before the bridge at the unnamed tributary to Penns Creek, and adjacent to the Salem Glenn Development. Motor vehicles are not allowed to drive back the field (access) road. If you walk back this access you will notice a station marker on the left, # 1. This is where the trail begins and is marked throughout with numbered posts or station markers that will correspond with the guide pamphlet.

Contact Craig Bingman, District Manager, at 570-837-3000, x114, for an updated pamphlet describing each Nature Trail station. Each station depicts a natural or unique resource along the trail. Go to "Nature Trail Downloads" at the right hand side of this web page to access the following: Nature Trail Fact Sheet & Directions and Nature Trail Maps.

Note: Some map and fact sheet information was supplied by the Penn Township (PA) Summer 2010 newsletter.

 Tree Farm Tour

The Central Susquehanna Woodland Owners Association (CSWOA), the Pennsylvania Tree Farm Program, along with the Snyder County Conservation District (SCCD), sponsored a tour of the woodland at the Selinsgrove Center Grounds in Penn Township, Snyder County on May 2010.

John Portzline, Assistant District Forester from District 7 (Bald Eagle) in Laurelton, was the main speaker for the day. He promoted the efforts of the PA Tree Farm Program and the importance of having Forest Stewardship Plan. (See more details below.)

SCCD currently manages the 440 acres. This includes 77 acres are woodland. The tour also included a visit to a working sawmill maintained by the Middlecreek Valley Antique Association as well as a walking tour of the SCCD Nature Trail. (More details above about the Nature Trail in this web page.)

Go to the Tree Farm Tour Recap posted under the "Tree Farm Tour Downloads" section of this web page. For more information about the SCCD's Forest Stewardship Plan, Forest stewardship plans in general or the Tree Farm System go to our Woodland Management web page for details, contacts and additional links.
