A conservation district is a subdivision of state government that follows county lines as boundaries. Funding for the conservation district's programs is obtained from the Snyder County Commissioners, PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other agencies. The Snyder County Conservation District was founded in 1956.

The Snyder County Conservation District will again be holding its Annual Tree Sale.
The pickup days are Thursday, April 15 and Friday, April 16, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Conservation District office.
Seedlings offered this year include: Douglas Fir, Norway Spruce, White Oak and Common Lilac. These are three and four year old seedlings and most have stem diameter the size of a pencil or a little larger.
This year, we will also sell fruit trees: two apple varieties (Honey Crisp and Fuji), one peach (Read Haven) and one cherry (Emperor Francis).
Also offered are wildflower seeds, butterfly bushes, hydrangeas rain barrels, bluebird boxes and tree tube protectors.

Orders will be taken now until Thursday, April 1, 2010. Office hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during non-holiday weekdays. (The Office will not be open on April 2, Good Friday.)
Payment must be enclosed with orders.
A 2-day course for municipal leaders in which to keep their communities eligible (or become eligible) for future Dirt & Gravel Road funds will be held on the following days:

The Snyder County Conservation District, along with AgChoice Farm Credit and Grass Roots 21, are sponsoring another meeting for farmers on Friday, February 12, 2010. It will be held on Christ Community United Methodist Church north of Selinsgrove, PA. The fee to attend will be $5.00. Potential topics include: no-till and cover crop farming and pasture grazing management.

If you are a certified manure hauler or broker, you can obtain continuing education credits (CECs) at the Snyder County Conservation District office on Thursday, February 18, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Others are welcome to attend if room permits.
Topics will include: 2010 Manure Expo Update, Act 49 Program Updates, Changes in Federal Environmental Policy Approach, Manure Application Setbacks and New Buffer Definitions, Winter Application, Manure Spreader Calibration-Using Fact Sheet 68, Overview of Swine Nutrient Value Study, Application of Mortality Compost, Diminishing Returns of Nutrient Efficiency and Economic Value with Increasing Application Rates, and Importance of Nutrient Balance Sheets.

The Snyder County Conservation District will hold its annual banquet on Friday, March 12, 2010, at the Christ Community United Methodist Church 3939 Park Road near Selinsgrove.
Traditionally, many individuals, organizations and FFA members are honored for their efforts toward conservation.
This year's guest speaker will be Catherine (Kate) Hastings . Hastings is an associate professor of communications at Susquehanna University . She also serves as an advisor for the student newspaper. During the banquet, she will give a presentation on the natural history and travel path changes of Penns Creek.
Door prizes will be given at the end of the event.
Tickets may be purchased from Directors and Associate Directors of the Conservation District Board. Tickets may also be purchased at the Conservation District office during regular work hours. Ticket prices are as follows: Adults are $10.00, children ages 5 to 10 are $7.00 and children under 5 are free. Please purchase tickets by Friday, March 6, 2010.

The Snyder County Conservation District is inviting all women to the 4th annual Women in Ag Forum from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at the Shade Mountain Winery.
The forum is designed especially for women to learn about the current issues and programs in agriculture. Topics discussed this year include the usefulness of rain barrels from Jason Winey, Conservation District Watershed Specialist. The first 50 registered will receive a rain barrel.
Lynn James from Penn State Cooperative Extension will discuss how canning/food preservation methods have changed since your grandmother preserved her peaches. Kathleen Bingman, RN, Evangelical Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Specialist, will give a presentation on “Heart Health for Women.” Carla Hine will speak on about the “Three Sister’s Buying Club” which is committed to the development of a sustainable local food system in the Central Susquehanna Valley through our support of local family farms, growers and food producers.
Please come and join us for a fun and relaxing day. Lunch will be provided.

Recent News, Updates, Sign-Ups, Etc.:
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is funding a project to assist farmers in the eastern half of the nation in updating or developing nutrient management plans and environmental assessments. This project, CleanEast, provides free nutrient management planning for those who apply. Go to the EPA

In October 2009, the Snyder County Conservation District administered a five-county riparian buffer tree planting program. On 26 sites, 10,038 trees were planted to create 52.3 acres of riparian buffers along streams on farms, rural sites and former coal mining sites in Snyder, Union, Centre, Clearfield and Cambria Counties .

The Snyder County Conservation District is in the process of gathering names of farmers and businesses willing to either rent out no-till drills or planters or custom hire their services. If you have a drill or planter and are interested, complete the

- The PCG-2 (NPDES General Permit, National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) has expired and the forms have changed. The first major change is that the NPDES permits will now be valid for two years. The permit fee is now $500.00 for the General and Individual NPDES permit. This is for the permit processing, site inspections and whatever else would need to be done with the permit. The Conservation District will still be receiving the E & S (erosion & sedimentation) plan review fees.
The NPDES permit forms have changed as well. The new forms for NPDES and instructions can be found on our Erosion Worksite Prevention web page. Call Mike Osgood, Resource Conservation Technician, at 570-837-3000, x116, for more information.
- NRCS is accepting applications for landowners interested in protecting water quality on their farms. For more information, go to the Conservation District's Agricultural Conservation Assistance web page.
- For example, NRCS is accepting applications for its CBWI (Chesapeake Bay Watershed Initiative) program. Sign-ups are being accepted now! Do not delay! Go to the Conservation District's Agricultural Conservation Assistance web page and contact NRCS's Middleburg Field Office (570-837-0007, x3) for more details.
